Sandra was born in Portsmouth and lived in the city all her life. An esteemed, if somewhat infamous Somerstown matriarch - where she lived. I met Sandra in the early days of the We Don’t Need Culture project at a coffee morning in Edgbaston house while sketching the residents. She immediately started to take the mick in no uncertain terms. Once I met Sandra I knew I had to paint her but she was not having any of it. It took me six weeks to convince her to sit for photographs. Even then she did not play ball - I got five blurry shots and one in focus. She became my poster girl for the project.
